Special Education Needs
In line with the school mission statement, the SEN team work with all pupils to ensure that each child is able to achieve and every child is valued for their unique skills and characters. Work is carried out with students who have difficulty either within the context of the classroom situation where they receive individual and group support, or in a withdrawal situation.
The policy for Special Educational Needs* is comprehensive and follows the Essex County Guidelines and the SEND Code of Practice 0 to 25 years (2015). The full policy is available via request made to the Headteacher. The main statement and aims of the policy are given below.
Policy Statement
The school is committed to meeting all students’ needs, academic, social and personal. All school personnel will be responsive to the educational, emotional and social needs of each individual.
In addition, the school is committed to having a Learning Support Department with a well-equipped Resource Area, a team of LSAs who work to ensure every pupil achieves, an interventions coordinator and learning mentor, and a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, responsible for the day-to-day operation of the school’s SEN Policy.
Aims and Entitlements
The school aims to provide a caring environment in which students can:
- Learn and develop to their full potential
- Work with others co-operatively
- Contribute to the ethos of the school constructively
- Build their self-confidence
- Be equipped with the knowledge and skills that they need for life after they leave school.
To achieve these aims the school will endeavour to:
- Have a balanced and child-centred approach when considering the best methods of helping individual children.
- Provide a differentiated curriculum which meets the needs of all the school’s children.
- Develop the commitment of staff and Governors for learning support.
- Work closely and collaboratively with parents, support services and other outside agencies.
- Allocate resources for special needs to ensure the needs of children with the most serious problems are met.
- Operate the SEND Code of Practice 0 to 25 years (2015) and implement policy successfully.
- Initiate individual programmes for children with statements, set objectives, review progress regularly and conduct annual reviews in accordance with statutory requirements.
- Provide equal opportunities for all.
Disability Provision
Following completion of the Building Schools for the Future project the school is now fully compliant with DDA requirements. The focus was to improve the ability to cater and accommodate all uses of the school site. The school now has three internal lifts of varying degrees to assist within the main school block. In addition to this there are two stand-alone lifts to aid movement from the main block to Science Block and the Sports Hall. The school has new pathways that provide a sloped walkway as well as three disabled bays in the new car park. These bays have a lowered kerb so as to enable access onto the pavement.
